The command symbols instructs plotl to place a symbol at each data point. Symbols has no effect on whether lines are used to connect data points as well.
The command nosymbols instructs plotl to not place symbols at each data point. If lines are not being used to connect data points then nosymbols does that for you. This is the default mode.
